Shooting Guns at the Gun Store Las Vegas
Unlike the UK shooting almost anything is legal in Nevada and probably for this reason it attracts loads and loads of Brits every year. For only a few dollars you can become Clint Eastwood, John Wayne, and Crocket, Tubs or some Mac 10 or some Uzi wielding maniac. All of this can be done not 15 minutes in a cab from MGM Grand straight down Tropicana East.
When you first walk into the Gunstore you know feel like Keanu Reeves in Matrix you know the line “I need guns, lots of guns”. The Gunstore seems to have every gun available with all types of shotguns, machine guns, automatic pistols, revolvers you name it they have it.
Three of us went we chose a gun each, it was $30 per gun for 30 shots and as long as we bought 30 rounds each we were allowed to have 10 rounds on each gun. We chose a gun each, Glok 21 45mm, Beretta 92F and a .38 Special Revolver, we were given the guns in a box. Next you are given a pair of goggles and ear muffs and taken to chose a target, basically you have a choice of either a silhouette of a man running or a selection of terrorists in various poises some holding hostages some just holding guns. You are then taken into the range given a safety talk where they warn you that if they tell you to put the gun down and you don’t comply they will not warn you again but will shoot you. Then they load the gun for you and you pop away at the targets and hear the loud bangs from the other shooters.
When you have finished they will take pictures of you with the guns so that you can send them home and show you work colleagues how grown up you are. After shooting way with the above we hired the special forces favourite the HK-MP5 machine gun (this is the baby that the police carry at airports and the alike) which I think was about $50 for 50 rounds and then we hired the Desert Eagle which I believe was .50 Cal and bloody heavy this I think was $20 for 5 shots it made one huge bang and had a hell of kick and my friend did not move his head when he was aiming and git hit in the mouth by an exiting cartridge.
All in all good fun and fair value and a great opportunity to do something that you can not do at home, it’s not cheap but then it is not too expensive either.
Oh just one thing I took a few spent cartridges as a souvenir and forgot about them, these set off the alarm on the metal scanner at McCarran airport on the way back and earn’t me a special search in a private room !!
Circus Circus, Las Vegas My Review
2880 Las Vegas Boulevard South
Las Vegas
NV 89109
+1 (702) 734 0410
CircusCircus Las Vegas
Location Circus Circus is at the very North end of the Strip, a fair walk from the major new and more exciting casinos. Travelling by foot at night particularly if you go North, can feel uneasy.
Theme Well I guess you have already spotted this, nestling at the very North end of the Strip a 200 ft neon clown; yup it’s the Circus. The main casino structure is in the form of a giant big top and all the buildings have red and white stripes down them, you can see what they are getting at. The main casino continues this OTT theme with circus acts, swinging from trapezes or walking over tightropes 40 ft above you head. I am sure I saw a few clowns around both in and out of costume.
Attractions Circus Circus opened in 1968. It was the first casino aimed at the family market, so as you can imagine there are loads of attractions with many of them aimed at the little ones. Adventuredome including Grand Slam Canyon is now the only theme park available to the public on the Strip; MGM Grand has gone corporate
hire only. This has rollercoaster’s, log flumes and all the usual thrill rides you would find elsewhere. All contained in a climate controlled massive glass dome. It represents great value at $16 for all rides all day. On the midway section (above the main casino floor) there is a state of the art video arcade as well as many fairground type stalls where you can win cuddly toys and the like. The centre stage gives free performances all day from 11am to midnight featuring animals, magicians, jugglers and the like, it’s free and there is never more than 30 minutes between performances. Hacket’s bungee jump also gives you the chance to jump from about 200 foot up with only an oversized rubber band to prevent you becoming pavement pizza.
Pool The pool is small and in a parking lot, it has horrible Circus Circus sun umbrellars and is full of screaming kids.
Shows and Entertainment Circus Circus is home to the largest permenant Circus in the world and they preform acts above the casino floor (see the James Bond film Diamonds are Forever), there is no actual showroom here and no shows ! There is the adventuredome but no proper shows, guess the kiddies would have to be cared for.
Dining Well the Circus Circus buffet is probably the most famous on the Strip, it is advertised everywhere as the cheapest on the strip and as feeding more mouths than any other. These are two facts that are most likely accurate, with dinner at just $11.99 lunch $10.99 and breakfast a mere $9.99 they are going to feed loads of people. The food is best described as boring and bland, I won’t go any further than that. Reviews I have read in several places made me decide to eat elsewhere. The food cannot be that bad though or it would not get the custom it does. The fact it has some of the longest dining queues in Vegas makes eating here is no quick deal. Circus Circus also houses a selection of fast food joints including McDonalds, Circus Pizzeria, a couple of Deli’s and a 24-hour coffee shop. Surprisingly Circus Circus also has two more up market restaurants Stivali (Italian) and The Steak House which is consistently voted the best in Vegas and friends that have eaten there feel its earn’t its accolade
Gaming Circus Circus actually has two casinos so far apart that a monorail joins them. In total there is 110,979 sq ft of gaming space, which has crammed in it nearly 3000 slot and video poker machines, about 70- tables and 7 roulette wheels. This is very much a low rollers joint and has stacks of nickel machines and table minimums of about $2, unlike other Strip casinos there are loads of these low stake tables. The skyrise casino is quite small but is quieter, less smoky and has less children in it than the main casino but no circus acts to watch as you wait for the change woman to get round to you. The service level you receive here is not as good as many other casinos on the Strip as it is aimed at low rollers and you get treated that way. The main casino is very smoky and this can not be good for the hoards of noisy, excited and badly behaved children that are everywhere. It has also been reported (though I haven’t seen it) that this casino is the chosen resort of the more unsavoury types who travel up from LA on US public holidays. Noticing that even the arcade has airport type metal detectors at the entrance there is probably some truth in this.
Drinks service Forget it. We were there 3 hours and never got a drink. Don’t know I they are just stingy or are worried that a “minor” will steal it when you are not looking.
Overall Circus Circus is aimed at families and budget travellers and accordingly is exceptional value, you get a lot of facilities for the price. You do however pay for this by having to put up with hundreds of children and a very poor location. This is the entry level casino of the Circus Circus group which includes Mandalay Bay, Luxor and Excalibur. There are many far nicer places than this on the Strip, which will give you exactly the same odds.
Good points Um… very tricky. Guess it must be that there is a very large selection of nickel machines and that my sister hit a jackpot here. Rooms are also very cheap.
Bad points Equally hard. Either the terrible location or the clientele
Top Tip Pay and extra $5-$10 a night and stay at Excalibur, if you have to stay here make sure that you stay in a tower and not in the motor lodge rooms.
Las Vegas with 6 teens – Trip Review
Traciee Dee wrote this trip report after travelling to Vegas with 6 teenagers and very kindly gave me permission to post this on my Blog. I know that many people emailing about travelling to Vegas with minors and this will hopefully give you an insight from someone who has actually done it. What makes her report unique is that she actually writes it from a unbiased point of view being a frequent visitor to Vegas accompanied only by her husband this time she could see it very differently and writes without the biased often seen by people who take children to Vegas.
“I know there is much controversy about kids/teens in Vegas so I thought I would put in my 2 cents after our trip.
“My husband and I go to Vegas two or three times a year, quick 2 night trips and we always have a lot of fun and enjoy ourselves. We start early and usually are wiped out by 10:30pm as we maybe had our first Bloody Mary at 8am. We have never brought the kids before this trip.
Long story short, due to teen schedules and life getting in the way our original summer vacation plans had to be scrubbed and we had to coordinate a quick trip before school starts on Monday. Kids wanted to go to Vegas and just walk the strip and go inside all the casinos. My husband and I were traveling with 4 girls 15-17 and two boys 18-19. Three were mine, 3 were friends.
We spent one night in Laughlin then a day at Cottonwood Cove where we rented a boat which was a blast. Drove to Vegas and spent two nights at Circus Circus. We stayed in the West Tower which had been redone and the rooms were quite nice. We got a deal which included a $10 hotel credit, two for one buffet (did not use) and 2 for 1 Mexitalia which was quite good and coupons for Adventuredome. Kids enjoyed the Adventuredome and I did not think Circus Circus was near as bad as the reviews I had read. That being said I would not stay there unless I had kids. Tip to avoid doing the long check out lines is to call an hour ahead and do the express check in.
We did the roller coasters. Sahara $10 per person for 60 seconds, NYNY we had two for one coupons-ride is $15 per person and a few hours at Adventuredome which was $20 per person with the $4 coupon we had from the hotel. Had dinner at Toby Keiths one night and ESPN Zone the other. Kids enjoyed both. We walked the whole strip and in and out of most Hotels/Casinos. We also used that double decker bus thing which was a steal at $5 per person for 24 hours. Only downside to the bus was the adults who did not want to wait in line and almost caused riots trying to cut in front of the line. We stayed out and about till after 1am and noticed the freaky stuff starts about 11pm.
Day three we spent a couple of hours downtown on Freemont and then off to Buffalo Bills in Primm-which is a story in itself….
Bottom line kids had fun, but there was a lot they could have done with out. The freaky, creepy stuff which is of course all a part of Vegas.
For me it was a tough two days. Honestly, I hated it and would tell any parent (especially with female teens) to think twice about the trip. The kids had little freedom as I wasn’t about to let them step a foot outside the Adventuredome without me. My advice, if you do take your kids, stay with them 24/7. I love Vegas, but it’s not a place for kids or teens. I saw things though a whole new set of eyes walking around with my kids and it wasn’t pretty. Enjoy Vegas for what it is and take your kids someplace they can have a little freedom and enjoy exploring on their own.
Funny thing happened to us at Mandalay Bay. We walked downstairs to try and find the ‘beach’ one night. Out of an unmarked door walk two of the freakiest guys we had seen yet. Dressed in black leather, gobbs of make up, spikey hair, major tatt’s and surrounded by body guards the size of the Hulk. One of the kids is looking at a poster on the wall and says isn’t this the guy we just saw? Face to face with Motley Crew and did not even know it.”
Big Vegas Offers , MGM, Mirage, Excalibur, Luxor Mandalay Bay, as of July 19
Summers coming and it hotting up in Las Vegas, the hotels have loads of great offers and it seems that Excalibur probably has the best offer at the moment with a free upgrade to a renovated Widescreen Room for free, Mirage as its Summer special with rooms for $77 and MGM Grand and Mandalay Bay are giving great fly back promotions. All of the codes belwo are direct with the hotel this means that unless its a non refundable offer you pay only the first nights deposit, if your plans change you can get a full refund or change your booking up to 48 hour’s before checking in and if the rate drops after you book if you contact the hotel they will drop yours.

Many of the offers on some of my older posts are out of date so I have decided to replace all of them with in date offers listed below, all of these offers are available for everyone they are booked directly with the hotel’s giving you not only cast iron security but also the best possible rate as the middleman is cut out, unless stated on the booking page all are 100% changeable and refundable with no penalty and you only pay the first night as a deposit upfront. Day Trips from Las Vegas, including the Grand Canyon and Death Valley
Leaving the excitement of the MGM Grand, Excalibur, Bellagio and Mirage etc is not always easy but sometimes it’s good to take a break from the Strip for a day or even just a few hours to get out and about and see some natural beauty. There are many places that are worth vesting easily within a day’s reach of Vegas and I have listed a few below. This is not meant to be an in depth guide the links to the parks will give you far more information than I could but hopefully this post may help you plan. Have a great trip – Simon
RED ROCK CANYON: Its about 20 miles west of Las Vegas out Charleston Blvd (you can pick up that street at the north end of the Strip) It’s a scenic drive-through park. Go early, not in the heat of the day; there’s no shade. The canyon did not have as much as we were hoping and apart from one main Red rock feature there was very little to make us want to go back. However one of my friends lives near by and says that if you leave the car in the car park and hike within an hour its spectacular, there us a an admission charge of $10, we did not pay as it was free on Christmas Day when we visited.
HOOVER DAM: Drive about 30 miles southeast of Vegas and go to Hoover Dam; the National Park Service offers tours there (@ $15.), though you can just park in the car park and walk over the Dam. Just before you get to the Dam there is a Casino called the Hacienda this offers great value food and is just the place for breakfast if you have left Vegas early, you can also take helicopter rides here over the Dam and Lake Mead. Go on past Hoover Dam to Boulder City and then to Lake Meade for a swim and/or to visit the new casino there. Also, there are tour companies that will take you on a cruise of the river below Hoover Dam.
VALLEY OF FIRE STATE PARK: Drive about 35 miles north of Vegas on I-15 and go to Valley of Fire State Park, another scenic park area. This is my favorite NP within easy reach of Vegas it’s really nice and well worth the trip. When you are here you may see a wedding as many couples get married here but only in the morning as it gets very hot in the day. The landscape is like nothing else you will see on earth and you easily be mistaken for thinking that you are on another planet. The $6 entrance fee represents amazing value.
ZION NATION PARK: It’s a long drive to Zion (about 2-3 hours), but you can drive North on I-15 to Zion National Park and back in one day. It is worth the trip and the $25 per car admission, this like most other National Parks is valid for 7 days.
DEATH VALLEY: If you like to visit National Parks, drive about an hour and a half south of Vegas on I-15 and take RT-127 to Death Valley National Park (total drive may be a good 3 hrs each way). Death Valley is has
the lowest point in the United States which is also the hottest place on the planet. It’s the place where in the summer you can fry eggs on the rocks, you will see mirages and is home to some of the most deadly creatures on the planet. You need to take lots of water with you something like 2 gallons each incase you break down and you need to check that your car rental company will allow you to drive there.
GRAND CANYON: The drive to the Grand Canyon is 5 long hard hours on mostly two lane roads with trucks and campers (only a short way on I-40). You can drive there and back in one day if you leave early morning, like 6:00-7:00 AM. That will put you there about noon and you will have 4 or 5 hrs before starting back and getting back to Vegas about 11:00PM. Its worth considering staying overnight at the Grand Canyon not only to break the journey but also to allow you to see the Canyon at the two best times of the day sunset and sunrise this is a lifetime experience and is worth the investment in both time and money. If you are going to stay over try and stay in the park it will cost less than you think. The park has a $25 entrance fee per car.
Top Ten Las Vegas gaming tips
I am not going to give you in depth gaming advice or lessons for a couple of reasons: -
Firstly I do not want to give anyone any ideas of how they could win or more importantly be considered in any way responsible for their losses. If I were in a position where I had this knowledge I would be a professional gambler.
Secondly there are many excellent books that have far more resources behind them than I have. I would recommend that you use these books to learn the games but nothing more as if the authors really had systems that guaranteed winning they would not bother writing books.
- If you are not sure about a game or rules on a table stand back for a few hands and watch and learn, this will also give you the opportunity to decide if you are happy with the atmosphere at the table.
- DO NOT GAMBLE MORE THAN YOU CAN AFFORD – this is the golden rule. Chances are you will not beat the house, in fact there is no chance about it you will not beat the house full stop so gamble for entertainment not to get rich.
- Never hand a dealer money place it on the table he is not allowed to take it form your hand and trying to pass him money will only cause you embarrassment.
- If you think that a dealer is rude just leave the table you can play anywhere do not put up with bad service
- Find out when the casino has free gaming lessons and use them they are totally free, good fun and you are not under any pressure to play once your lessons have finished.
- If you are new to a game try playing in the morning when the casino is less busy then the dealers will be more able to assist you more. This is particularly useful with craps. I had a nightmare my first time playing when I shot I kept throwing the dice out of the pit and hitting people on other tales and couldn’t remember my bet odds. The croupier and other gamblers were fine about it. Things may have been very different if it had been say 10pm on a Friday night.
- Do not use any system that involves upping your stakes to cover your losses. You think that you can win
but it will not last you will have a bad run and lose big time in the long term. I used to play with systems like this but although you may win 4 out of 5 times in the end you will have a losing run that more than wipes out all of your winnings. The casinos love people who run escalating stake systems and casinos only love people who lose money to them. The only system that can work is to up your stakes when winning so you are gambling with casinos money. There are several strategies that if followed may reduce the house’s edge a little. This is particularly useful for blackjack but the house always has the edge this is what pays for everything. - Don’t play Keno this has terrible odds stacked in the favour of the house and although simple is really not worth a bet.
- When you are new to a game look for a casino with low stakes that way if you are making mistakes or just learning your losses are likely to be smaller. Hotels on the Strip have higher minimums than those downtown but, Circus Circus, Rivera, Imperial Palace, Stratosphere, Excalibur, and the Sahara have lower stakes than the posher Strip casinos.
- Get an online account and practice before you get out to Vegas with many of these you get free bonus’s every month so you can practice on the casino’s money and you may get lucky
If you can not make it to Vegas, but still want the thrill or the experience or playing consider online bingo sites to appease the player in all of us
