Britsih Airways to start direct London – Las Vegas service

It seems that Virgin Atlantic is soon to lose its exclusive direct route from the the UK to Las Vegas which it has been enjoying since BMI stopped its direct flights from Manchester in April and since MaxJet went under Xmas 2007.British Airways are about to annouce that they to will be flying daily from London to Las VegasI have to be honest my preferred route is LHR to LAS with United Airlines via either SFO or LAX but lets hope that this competition can do something to shrink the fares and offer us even better value, to match the best value Las Vegas hotel rooms that can be found here.

Officials for the carrier are scheduled to announce a new direct daily service between McCarran International Airport and London’s Heathrow Airport, the busiest international airport in the world. The service, scheduled to begin in October, has been in the works for years and the decision by British Airways to proceed despite the global recession is a major vote of confidence in the future of Las Vegas, which has been hit particularly hard by the economic downturn.

The plan is for daily service to begin Oct. 25, with a flight arriving in Las Vegas at 5:10 p.m. The return trip to London will depart at 7 p.m., Lampl said. The airline will use a Boeing 777 configured with 274 seats, 24 of which will be “world traveler plus,” 36 business-class with seats that recline fully to 180 degrees and 214 economy class. Lampl said the company identified 35 major cities, including Rome; Prague, Czech Republic; Stockholm, Sweden; and Paris, from which travelers could connect to Las Vegas with less than two hours waiting at Heathrow.

If British Airways flies the route at 72 percent load factor, the average load factor for the airline in the most recent reporting period, it would mean about 12,000 arrivals and departures at McCarran a month. The number could be higher if British Airways matches the 92 percent load factor Virgin Atlantic achieves on its route from a smaller airport with less connection potential. Great Britain is the No. 3 provider of foreign tourists to Las Vegas behind Canada and Mexico, according to the LVCVA.

Wynn, Las Vegas – my review

Wynn

3131 Las Vegas Blvd Sth
Las Vegas
Nevada 89109
www.wynnlasvegas.com

Location
Wynn is the last hotel on the North on the main part of the Strip, on the site of the Desert Inn next to Palazzo and opposite the Fashion Show Mall.

Theme
It’s what Steve Wynn does best first at Golden Nugget, then at Mirage and Bellagio and now at Wynn, luxury. I guess you could say European luxury, or that is what Mr Wynn would like you to say everything is there to show opulence and to look expensive, now expense spared. If money is not the object then the objects here all cost a stack of money.

Attractions
The showpiece is the “ Lake of Dreams ” a 3 acre lake which contains loads of lights to make a full multimedia show. There is a 170ft Mountain and 5 waterfalls, the show uses the water falls as screens, there are loads of bushes and flowers around them but I was not impresses with this show. As with Bellagio there is a Conservatory but smaller but really nice, no rollercoaster’s here instead you have Wynn’s gallery which hits the mark for the more refined and concerning people who are the targets of his marketers. There is also a Ferrari garage that you have to pay $10 to enter!

Pool The pools here are nice rather like Bellagio style and quality are the order of the day rather than wave machines and waterfalls.

Rooms, All of the rooms at Wynn are called suites we stayed in a Panorama suite on the 57th floor wow what a view ! The bed was very comftable second only to the MGM Grand and all of the furnishings are top quality, the maid service comes twice a day and there is a turndown service. The bathrooms are big with a nice tub and shower as well as a TV in there, I know it is sad to watch TV in Vegas but the selection of channels at Wynn was far better than anywhere else we have stayed on the Strip. The mini bard was well stocked but very expensive and you get charged just for moving stuff !

Shows and Entertainment
The Encore Theatre is now home to amazing all rounder and Steve Wynn favourite Danny Gans. Wynn’s other show is La Reve its a Cirque De Soleil type show and like O performed in water !

Dining You would have thought that with a resort this up market that the buffet would not have featured but you would have been wrong and it is rather modestly called The Buffet (B$17.95, L£21.95 D Sun-Thur $33.95 Fri & Sat $37.95 and Weekend Brunch $28.95 and an extra $6 for Champagne to be included. I have not eaten here but despite the price the people I have spoken to who have think its excellent value but the queues can regularly be over 2 hours long. As you would expect there is a selection of other restaurants at Wynn mainly with a European flavour don’t expect a cheap meal but that does not mean that you can’t expect value. Most of the fine dining establishments are run by celebrity chefs. If you eat at the SW make sure you get a table outside and ask to have one with a good view of the show. The coffee shop at eth drugstore has fantastic coffee and great fruit salads but like everything else at Wynn it’s pricey. Zooacrackers is a great Deli with tower sandwiches and the Terrace Point Café which is open 24/7is very good again all heavy on the pocket.

Gaming
It’s big and surprisingly there are a load of slots including nickels and pennies with good pay out. There are stacks of tables and the norm minimum is $15 on BJ and other card games but most tables particularly at weekends are much higher. Craps sometimes starts as low as $10! Don’t bother asking to get rated if you are playing less than $25 per hand it’s not worth it. The players card is very good and well worth joining. If you were told you were in the Bellagio you would probably believe it.

Drinks service
Steve Wynn knows how to look after his customers even if you are on the penny slots polite waitresses come up regularly and serve you with strong drinks this is one of the best drinks services on the Strip.

Overall
The service from all the staff from the check in clerk to the valet parker to maid is the great the best you will get in Vegas. This place oozes luxury, it’s a nice treat but unless you have loads of money (and we don’t) you cant get the most out of it, that said however short lived you do feel like a star whilst you are there.

Good points
The attention to detail is amazing everything is quality and the attentiveness of the staff.

Bad points
The price everything from sodas in the shop to ice cream its expensive this is a place for rich folk. The location can be a pain it is just that little bit too far down the Strip and makes it feel and effort to go anywhere else.

Top Tip
Join the players card and ask if there are any promotions usually if you earn 50 points in your first 24 hours you get two free buffets.

BANK (rupt) Nightclub at Bellagio Las Vegas

truly is a terrible nightclub that does a real disservice to the greatness that is the Bellagio.  It is disappointing that one of Las Vegas’ most opulent hotels has created one of the most unappealing and least atmospheric nightspots.

Entry to Bank is expensive compared to other night spots on the strip.    The club is accessed by two escalators that send you into a moodily lit club.  If you have even seen one of the LA clubs featured on The Hills MTV show you will get the idea.  The club décor is nice but uninspiring.

The club itself is surprisingly small designed around a single dance floor.  Steps from the bars lead down past two levels of VIP seating to the dance floor.  When dancing you feel like you are in amphitheatre being inspected by the VIP tables.  The dance floor itself is rectangular with seating set into an alcove on one side.

The biggest problem with the club is that it lacks any discernible atmosphere.  Compared to JET and PURE, which bounce to happy partying folk everyone in BANK looked miserable.

On the night we visited the DJ was trying to mix Persian dance music.  Not only did the tune selection suck, the DJ couldn’t mix at all.  When a song did rouse a resemblance of life from the dance floor the tune was pulled and another terrible track dropped.  The DJ could not read the room at all, which meant at regular intervals streams of people filed off the dance floor simultaneously to visit the bar.

To its credit the bar staff are cool and friendly.  It was easy to get served and there were plenty of staff to ensure people were not waiting around.

The quicker the Bellagio produces a nightclub with the same pedigree and prestige as the hotel and casino the better.  The Bank is BANK-rupt avoid at all costs!

Ruling against Las Vegas Gym in sex discrimination may have a knock on to Las Vegas Clubs

Could this be the end of Ladies free entry to Las Vegas nightclubs or free drinks for the ladies ? Interesting story in the Las Vegas Sun

Todd Phillips, a pale, slender and soft-spoken man who wears glasses, doesn’t look like a much of a tough guy.

And yet his persistence in pursuing a discrimination complaint he filed against a chain of local gyms — resulting in a public hearing by the Nevada Equal Rights Commission’s board Friday and a court order forcing the gyms to comply with a ruling in Phillips’ favor — is almost sure to shake up the lucrative nightclub industry in Las Vegas casinos, while establishing Phillips as an unlikely symbol of civil rights.

With a 3-1 vote Friday, the commission ruled that a Las Vegas Athletic Club promotion offering free memberships to women is discriminatory.

Las Vegas nightclubs typically offer free admission to women while men pay steep fees to get in — a policy that has been virtually stamped out in other states because of lawsuits like Phillips’.

Yet Friday was mostly an embarrassment for the Las Vegas Athletic Club, which was asked how the promotion could be reconciled with other forms of discrimination.

Phillips questioned whether a soul food restaurant should be able to offer discounts to attract white customers. Board members piled on, asking whether it would be appropriate for the gym to offer free memberships for, say, Catholics.

When the gyms’ owner said the promotion was intended to encourage women to patronize gyms in part because men accumulate more bad debts, a deputy attorney general asked whether the company had done similar studies on black versus white customers.

At the hearing, an attorney for the Nevada Resort Association, which represents major casinos, complained that the decision would have ramifications for businesses unable to make their cases.

Too bad, the board said — casinos weren’t party to the complaint.

Las Vegas Money Saving Tips Free WiFi access on the Strip

If you want internet access in your hotel room in Las Vegas most of the hotels are very happy to provide this, they are also very happy to charge you quite a high fee for this privilege. The lowest you are likely to pay is around $9.99 per 24hrs but you are more likely to pay over $15 for the same period. The hotels will claim that this is to cover the costs of the servers and the support staff etc but hey they don’t charge you for extra bed linen or pillows and these have an infrastructure to pay for and lets face it casinos all ready have a load of IT infrastructure in place !! What they really want to is to ensure that you spend more time on the casino floor or in shows and restaurants rather than  sitting in your room browsing the web. The good news is that VegasUncovered lists below places on the Strip (or very near) that have free WifFi internet access, whilst you cant do everything you need to do on a public internet connection hopefully this will prove to be useful and save some money for a few people.

Tipping in Las Vegas – how, who and how much to tip in Las Vegas

Las VEgas Strip

Las vegas StripBelow is what I tip, I am not saying that this is generous (I am mean) but its what I generally tip and only once has anyone acted in a way where they thought that I had not tipped enough. My tips are based on a mid range casino like MGM, Luxor or Monte Carlo if you are at a top hotel like Wynn, Mirage or Bellagio adjust up slightly and a cheaper property like Excalibur or Circus Circus slightly less.

Bell Boy – I generally tip $2 per bag when it arrives in the room I don’t generally tip the person who gets my stuff out of the trunk as the tips are pooled so they should be covered. I would do the same for the Bell boy who delivers my bags back to my car or taxi when I leave. Sometimes you can wait ages for your bags or for a Bell boy to come to your room I still tip as the Bell Boy is generally doing his best but in busy times there are just not enough of them employed by the hotel.

Check in clerk – I always tip the check in clerk before my room is assigned, if I want an upgrade using the $20 trick, even if its just for a view of the Vegas Strip then I tip at least $20 (see here). If I just want to make sure I don’t have the room by the kitchen extractor fan or with a stunning view of the third level of the parking lot maybe $10.

The Maid – the poor maid often gets forgotten about because you don’t see her, I always leave at least $3 per day for the maid, usually on the pillow or under a spent bottle of toiletries.

Dealers – I am slightly funny about this I rarely tip a dealer directly but if I am doing well I put small side bets for the dealer every now and again, when I leave the table if I am up I will usually tip the dealer about 5% up to about $50. I have had many dealers in Las Vegas who I have found either moody or boring in this case regardless of what I win I will not tip.

Cocktail Waitresses –In Las Vegas all drinks are free whilst you are playing if they are served to you by a cocktail waitress but you need to tip.If I am just passing and don’t expect to stay I tip $1 – $2 per drink if I am going to be there for a while I tip $5 per drink for the first one then usually $1 per drink after that. See here for more detail.

Barman – I tip $2 – $5 per round up to 5 drinks I think that this is probably on the stingy side but that is what I tip. In London you dont usually tip a barman but this is expected in Las Vegas.

Bellagio Las Vegas, secret rates ;)

Valet Parking – There is no charge for valet parking in Las Vegas (except at the Four Seasons) so tip the guy, but only when you collect your car usually tip $2 if I want it quickly and ask and I get it quickly thi.s can become $5 – $10

Guy that calls the cab, outside most hotels there is a guy who calls the cab and opens the door for you, most people tip him $1 I don’t I am happy an capable of calling a cab myself just not allowed to.

Cab Driver – This depends if it’s a very short trip under say $6 I give the change to $10, this is to compensate the cabbie for the time he has spent waiting and the fact he could have got a better fare. $6-$10 generally the change and a couple of dollars $10 upwards the change + 20%. If the cab driver is moody or if he takes me what I think is a long route he won’t get tipped he wont like it but he wont get tipped. I am on vacation I am paying for a service and part of that service is his attitude.

Britney Spears Las Vegas shows are denied by manager

Britney

Rumours that Britney Spears would be preforming at the end of the year in Las Vegas were put around by the press , after the Britney was spotted dining with Palms Hotel & Casino owner George Maloof Jnr, in Los Angeles.

Her former manager Larry Rudolph – who has made up his differences with the star – has denied reports she is secretly negotiating for a come back in the faboulous Las Vegas.
He tells the Las Vegas Review Journal, “She’s not here (in Las Vegas) and she’s not coming in. I wouldn’t lie to you.

Yesterday a Los Angeles court heard that Britney is still incapable of participating in any legal proceedings, with her attorney telling the court that her doctor hopes to carry out “additional testing in the not-too-distant future”.
