Could Las Vegas drop the gaming age to 18 ?

There have been discussions on dropping the legal age for gambling to 18 in Nevade writes Richard Velotta. My thoughts are that it will not generate much extra revenue unless the drinking ages is reduced as well, I cant see many out of stateers coming in to gamble if they can not drink and get in to clubs, it would also create a nightmare for cocktail waitresses having to card everyone. With the casinos making more and more of their profit from clubs, and resturants its not really in their interest to have all these people in so dont expect anything to change anytime soon.

Nevada’s top gaming regulator says he’ll ask state legislators whether they have any appetite to lower the minimum gambling age from 21 to 18 as a way to drum up state gaming revenue during the recession.

Lowering the gambling age was suggested by a gaming industry lawyer in a question-and-answer session with regulators at Friday’s gaming law conference sponsored by the State Bar of Nevada.

State Gaming Control Board Chairman Dennis Neilander and Nevada Gaming Commission Chairman Peter Bernhard were asked their thoughts about changing Nevada’s gambling age limit from 21 to 18.

Neilander said he would take the suggestion to Steven Horsford, the new Senate majority leader, and Assembly Speaker Barbara Buckley.

The question was raised by Thomas Smock, an attorney for Aristocrat Technologies Inc., a slot machine manufacturer.

Contacted Monday, Smock said he wasn’t representing Aristocrat when asking the question, but thought the discussion was relevant because of the economic downturn.

“I personally feel that this is a way that additional revenue could be generated, and if that means keeping our teachers employed and not cutting the state budget any further, I think it should at least be discussed,” he said.

The public has long debated the age of adulthood, and Smock pointed out that 18-year-olds are allowed to vote and serve their country in the military.

Neilander warned that the proposal would undergo intense scrutiny from groups concerned about problem gambling and underage players.

Neilander and Bernhard said they neither supported nor opposed the idea.

There is some precedent in bordering states for allowing those 18 and older to gamble. The age requirement to play at most tribal casinos is 18 in California. In Arizona, 18-year-olds were allowed to play, but in 2002 voters approved a gambling expansion initiative that changed the age limit to 21.

Nevada law says a person under the age of 21 years shall not “play, be allowed to play, place wagers at, or collect winnings from, whether personally or through an agent, any gambling game, slot machine, race book, sports pool or pari-mutuel operator; loiter, or be permitted to loiter, in or about any room or premises wherein any licensed game, race book, sports pool or pari-mutuel wagering is operated or conducted or be employed as a gaming employee except in a counting room.”

Any person who breaks the law is guilty of a misdemeanor.

The statute also says that thinking someone is over 21 is no excuse for violating the law. Smock said he plans to forward demographic information to Neilander and Bernhard showing that there are about 12 million Americans 18 to 21 years old who could be allowed to gamble if the law were changed.

Because the prohibition of under-21 gambling is a state law, the Legislature would have to pass a bill and the governor would have to sign the legislation to change it.

Neilander said he would mention the idea to Horsford and Buckley, and will meet with the Nevada Legislature when it convenes in February.

$20 Upgrade Trick an Update, Las Vegas

Since I first published the $20 ugrade trick on my website I have had a quite a few emails from both people who have thanked me saying the $20 upgrade trick this has worked and others almost blaming me because it has not and they have had to end up staying in the room that they have paid for – how terrible. More recently I have been reading on other sites and blogs people saying that the $20 upgrade trick does not really work and how it’s just a waste of time and you get the same result just for being friendly and polite. Some people have even said that it annoys the check in clerks and if you try it they put you in a basement room with no windows with the Brady bunch in the room next to you.

So I thought it time that I wrote another post on this very popular subject and make it clear what I know either through personal experience or that of friends rather than say what I think (but without trying it) which it seems many people are keen to do on chat rooms and forums. You will see below the hotels in Las Vegas where the $20 upgrade trick has worked.

I have had success at many resorts in actually getting a room above the standard to what I had paid for, even if you don’t get the upgrade by tipping the clerk will generally put in more effort to accommodate your preferences with a room on the same level, lets face it not all rooms are equal. As well as these successes I have had some failures but in each instance the clerk has handed me my tip back. I have a standard room booked for Xmas and you bet that I will be trying this then 😉 Its worth noting that staff at MGM Grand, Las Vegas and Mandalay Bay have been told that they face disciplinary action if they are found to be taking “bribes” for room upgrades this does not mean that they will not be happy to take them nor does it mean that they will not get you a nicer room on the same level that you have paid for but it does mean that you are less likely to get an upgrade to higher level of room or suite than you have booked.

This Las Vegas trick can work at any hotel and is worth a shot the worst that can happen is you get what you have paid for.

1.Before you leave home make sure you know what the levels of rooms are at the resort so you know what you are being offered and if it is something that you want.

2.Before you get to the check in desk place a folded $20/$50/$100 note between your credit card and your ID and ask the clerk if there are any complimentary upgrades available for the period that you are there.

3.Try to look for a youngish clerk as your odds are usually better with them than an older one and one at the end of the check in desk so that they are not overheard and be discreet. A young and friendly looking will
improve your chance of success.

4.You generally have more chance of success if your room is booked directly with the hotel rather than through a consolidator. You can book directly here for the best price using the best codes on the web

The most important thing is to make sure that you will be happy if the $20 Upgrade trick does not work that you will be happy in the accommodation that you have booked.

Luxor one of the Best value budget hotels in Las Vegas

Having hotels from only a few dollars night to suites costing 10’s of thousands Las Vegas caters well for every budget. I have stayed in most of the properties on the Strip (not the $10k + suites – oh how I wish) and the cheapest does not always represent the best value, in fact some of the cheaper properties are just plain nasty or/and in poor locations. Many people say “oh I am only sleeping in my room” this maybe the case I still want to go back to a place that is clean and wake up feeling that I want to get off of the property as quickly as I can, even if you only sleep there it’s still nice to be able to have a little play or a drink before turning in at night and getting a nice breakfast in the morning. My view is that I you are traveling to Las Vegas its going to cost you money and you are going to spend money and the cost difference between a cheap hotel and a decent hotel is often only a few dollars and this is money well spent, I mean cutting your gaming budget by $10 per day can mean you are staying somewhere nice and not spending at least that every day in cabs. I also think that staying on the Strip is a must for Vegas first timers you want to spend your time on the Strip and in the hotels and not in cabs or on shuttles.

In recent years the prices at Luxor has come down I don’t know why as they have spend millions improving the resort putting in new clubs, LAX and Cathouse and several new cool bars. I always used to spend at least my first night in Vegas at Luxor as it was close to the airport and it has a real “I’m here in Vegas” feel.

The pyramid rooms are slightly cheaper than tower rooms and I prefer them, they are large clean and you open the door directly on to a walkway in the Atrium and can hear all the clinking of machines and look down directly on to the mezzanine as soon as you walk out of your room, this for me is priceless. The spa suites are awesome and much cheaper than most other suites in town of a similar or even smaller size, they have a separate living room and a huge spa under the window which at night is very cool, as all spa suites are in the corners your view has two different aspects.

Luxor has great dining options both the buffet and the Pyramid coffee shop are excellent and there are several other more expensive restaurants as well as the food court with Nathan’s, McDonalds etc.

Luxor has a great Mezzanine floor this has a video arcade and an IMAX cinema, here there is also a shopping Mall that connects Luxor to Mandalay Bay, as this is a separate floor from the casino which means it’s easier for those with Children, though Luxor is not a resort that I have ever seen over run with kids.

Luxor has a huge pool which never seems to be too crowded (though it can be a little short of shade) and a very large spa and gym. The entertainment program at Luxor is also very good, Believe is a new Cirque De Soleil show staring Criss Angel, Carrot Top is one of the funniest guys in Vegas and there is a sexy topless review called Fantasy.

Luxor is connected to Mandalay Bay and Excalibur both indoor walkways and a monorail. Whilst Luxor may not be a Bellagio or a Wynn it offers the full Vegas experience for a very small cost, most of the specials have great extras thrown in and you would not get a hotel of this standard anywhere else in the world for anything close to the price that you pay at Luxor.

Staying Vegas for me is about value not about getting the very cheapest room, if I don’t like the property or don’t like the room then this to me is not value. I have probably spent more nights in Las Vegas at Luxor than any other hotel and I feel that Luxor is a good full service resort and the only budget thing about Luxor, Las Vegas is the price.

Location Circus Circus is at the very North end of the Strip, a fair walk from the major new and more exciting casinos. Travelling by foot at night particularly if you go North, can feel uneasy.

Theme Well I guess you have already spotted this, nestling at the very North end of the Strip a 200 ft neon clown; yup it’s the Circus. The main casino structure is in the form of a giant big top and all the buildings have red and white stripes down them, you can see what they are getting at. The main casino continues this OTT theme with circus acts, swinging from trapezes or walking over tightropes 40 ft above you head. I am sure I saw a few clowns around both in and out of costume.

Attractions Circus Circus opened in 1968. It was the first casino aimed at the family market, so as you can imagine there are loads of attractions with many of them aimed at the little ones. Adventuredome including Grand Slam Canyon is now the only theme park available to the public on the Strip; MGM Grand has gone corporate hire only. This has rollercoaster’s, log flumes and all the usual thrill rides you would find elsewhere. All contained in a climate controlled massive glass dome. It represents great value at $16 for all rides all day. On the midway section (above the main casino floor) there is a state of the art video arcade as well as many fairground type stalls where you can win cuddly toys and the like. The centre stage gives free performances all day from 11am to midnight featuring animals, magicians, jugglers and the like, it’s free and there is never more than 30 minutes between performances. Hacket’s bungee jump also gives you the chance to jump from about 200 foot up with only an oversized rubber band to prevent you becoming pavement pizza.

Pool The pool is small and in a parking lot, it has horrible Circus Circus sun umbrellars and is full of screaming kids.

Shows and Entertainment Circus Circus is home to the largest permenant Circus in the world and they preform acts above the casino floor (see the James Bond film Diamonds are Forever), there is no actual showroom here and no shows ! There is the adventuredome but no proper shows, guess the kiddies would have to be cared for.

Dining Well the Circus Circus buffet is probably the most famous on the Strip, it is advertised everywhere as the cheapest on the strip and as feeding more mouths than any other. These are two facts that are most likely accurate, with dinner at just $11.99 lunch $10.99 and breakfast a mere $9.99 they are going to feed loads of people. The food is best described as boring and bland, I won’t go any further than that. Reviews I have read in several places made me decide to eat elsewhere. The food cannot be that bad though or it would not get the custom it does. The fact it has some of the longest dining queues in Vegas makes eating here is no quick deal. Circus Circus also houses a selection of fast food joints including McDonalds, Circus Pizzeria, a couple of Deli’s and a 24-hour coffee shop. Surprisingly Circus Circus also has two more up market restaurants Stivali (Italian) and The Steak House which is consistently voted the best in Vegas and friends that have eaten there feel its earn’t its accolade

Gaming Circus Circus actually has two casinos so far apart that a monorail joins them. In total there is 110,979 sq ft of gaming space, which has crammed in it nearly 3000 slot and video poker machines, about 70- tables and 7 roulette wheels. This is very much a low rollers joint and has stacks of nickel machines and table minimums of about $2, unlike other Strip casinos there are loads of these low stake tables. The skyrise casino is quite small but is quieter, less smoky and has less children in it than the main casino but no circus acts to watch as you wait for the change woman to get round to you. The service level you receive here is not as good as many other casinos on the Strip as it is aimed at low rollers and you get treated that way. The main casino is very smoky and this can not be good for the hoards of noisy, excited and badly behaved children that are everywhere. It has also been reported (though I haven’t seen it) that this casino is the chosen resort of the more unsavoury types who travel up from LA on US public holidays. Noticing that even the arcade has airport type metal detectors at the entrance there is probably some truth in this.

Drinks service Forget it. We were there 3 hours and never got a drink. Don’t know I they are just stingy or are worried that a “minor” will steal it when you are not looking.

Overall Circus Circus is aimed at families and budget travellers and accordingly is exceptional value, you get a lot of facilities for the price. You do however pay for this by having to put up with hundreds of children and a very poor location. This is the entry level casino of the Circus Circus group which includes Mandalay Bay, Luxor and Excalibur. There are many far nicer places than this on the Strip, which will give you exactly the same odds.

Good points Um… very tricky. Guess it must be that there is a very large selection of nickel machines and that my sister hit a jackpot here. Rooms are also very cheap.

Bad points Equally hard. Either the terrible location or the clientele

Top Tip Pay and extra $5-$10 a night and stay at Excalibur, if you have to stay here make sure that you stay in a tower and not in the motor lodge rooms.

Hatton vs. Malignaggi, a 12-round Junior Welterweight World title unification bout for Hatton’s Ring Magazine Junior Welterweight World Championship and Malignaggi’s International Boxing Federation (IBF) Junior Welterweight World Championship, is presented by Golden Boy Promotions in association with Punch Promotions and DiBella Entertainment, and will air live on HBO’s World Championship Boxing.

Top Ten Las Vegas gaming tips

I am not going to give you in depth gaming advice or lessons for a couple of reasons: –

Firstly I do not want to give anyone any ideas of how they could win or more importantly be considered in any way responsible for their losses. If I were in a position where I had this knowledge I would be a professional gambler.

Secondly there are many excellent books that have far more resources behind them than I have. I would recommend that you use these books to learn the games but nothing more as if the authors really had systems that guaranteed winning they would not bother writing books.

1. If you are not sure about a game or rules on a table stand back for a few hands and watch and learn, this will also give you the opportunity to decide if you are happy with the atmosphere at the table.
2. DO NOT GAMBLE MORE THAN YOU CAN AFFORD – this is the golden rule. Chances are you will not beat the house, in fact there is no chance about it you will not beat the house full stop so gamble for entertainment not to get rich.
3. Never hand a dealer money place it on the table he is not allowed to take it form your hand and trying to pass him money will only cause you embarrassment.
4. If you think that a dealer is rude just leave the table you can play anywhere do not put up with bad service
5. Find out when the casino has free gaming lessons and use them they are totally free, good fun and you are not under any pressure to play once your lessons have finished.
6. If you are new to a game try playing in the morning when the casino is less busy then the dealers will be more able to assist you more. This is particularly useful with craps. I had a nightmare my first time playing when I shot I kept throwing the dice out of the pit and hitting people on other tales and couldn’t remember my bet odds. The croupier and other gamblers were fine about it. Things may have been very different if it had been say 10pm on a Friday night.
7. Do not use any system that involves upping your stakes to cover your losses. You think that you can win but it will not last you will have a bad run and lose big time in the long term. I used to play with systems like this but although you may win 4 out of 5 times in the end you will have a losing run that more than wipes out all of your winnings. The casinos love people who run escalating stake systems and casinos only love people who lose money to them. The only system that can work is to up your stakes when winning so you are gambling with casinos money. There are several strategies that if followed may reduce the house’s edge a little. This is particularly useful for blackjack but the house always has the edge this is what pays for everything.
8. Don’t play Keno this has terrible odds stacked in the favour of the house and although simple is really not worth a bet.
9. When you are new to a game look for a casino with low stakes that way if you are making mistakes or just learning your losses are likely to be smaller. Hotels on the Strip have higher minimums than those downtown but, Circus Circus, Rivera, Imperial Palace, Stratosphere, Excalibur, and the Sahara have lower stakes than the posher Strip casinos.
10. Get an online account and practice before you get out to Vegas with many of these you get free bonus’s every month so you can practice on the casino’s money and you may get lucky
